They wanted to pay certain actors (including Lisa Edelstein) less per episode so they could pay Olivia Wilde more as her new contract stipulated (due to her being an "in demand" actor now). Lisa Edelstein was not happy about this and didn't renew her contract which resulted in Cuddy being written off the show.
